To apply for a Missouri driver’s license you will need to go to the Missouri Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV) with the following items listed below. If this is your initial driver’s license you will
have to take a written exam, pass a driving test and take a vision test. Please read the Driver’s
License Guide for helpful information in obtaining your driver’s license and to prepare for the
tests:

Items to take with you to the DMV:
1. Proof of lawful presence
F-1 and J-1 student and scholars must provide all of the following:
o Passport.
o I-94.
o Visa.
o I-20 or DS-2019.
o Letter from OIP verifying immigration status.
F-2 or J-2 dependents must provide all of the following:
o Passport.
o I-94.
o Visa.
o I-20 of F-1 or DS-2019 of J-1.
o Letter from OIP verifying immigration status of the principle F-1 or J-1.
H-1B scholars must provide all of the following:
o Passport.
o I-94/form I-797 that includes I-94.
o Verification of employment (e.g. Job offer letter)
H-4 dependents must provide all of the following:
o Passport.
o I-94/form I-797 that includes I-94.
o Verification of H-1’s employment (e.g. Job offer letter)
2. Proof of residence in the state of Missouri. One of the following:
o Utility bill (most recent).
o Bank statement (most recent).
o Paycheck (most recent).
o Housing rental contract of current residence.
o An official letter/document from another state or local government agency, on
the agency’s letterhead or contains the official seal of the issuing agency, within
the past 30 days.
o Letter or other documentation issued by postmaster within past 30 days.
o Other government document that contains the name and address of the
applicant, within the past 30 days.
3. Proof of identity. Provide your Social Security number if you have received one. If you
have not received a Social Security card, go to the
Social Security office to obtain a letter
stating you are not eligible for a Social Security card.
