RESEARCH & CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
The scholarship of discovery, integration and my research interests
I define the university as a democratic organization entrusted to study, teach and advance the
noble idea of social justice among all members of our nation. I give particular importance to the
naturalistic inquiry into the variables related to access to postsecondary education by
marginalized populations. This scholarship can be as discrete as the relationship among
HIV/AIDS, college students and culture; as general as the enduring enigmas faced by colleges
and universities; as crucial as giving a voice to American Indian students or; as disturbing as
facing the death of a college student. Moreover, as a faculty of color who was awarded tenure at
the OU and as an associate professor at UCF I am committed to open research forums or
platforms to junior scholars. Thus, I construct co-authorship as my obligation and duty.

SERVICE
The scholarship of Service and Application
I agree with Boyer (1990) who stated that for service to be considered scholarship it ‘must be
tied directly to one’s special field of knowledge and related to, and flow directly out of, this
professional activity’ (p. 22). My work in this area aims at bridging the theoretical issues and the
problems of praxis and procedure within the university as a social organization. I generally frame
the scholarship of service within the work of Kennedy (1997) who describes these activities as
our academic duty, the corresponding responsibility that balances the privilege of academic
freedom.
