sentence for each word in this book. The more
frequently you encounter words in a variety of
contexts, the better you will be able to remem-
ber them, and even discern the nuances of their
meaning. So, the best way to learn GRE vocab-
ulary is to read, read, read!
If you are currently an undergraduate, you’re
probably scrambling to keep up with your
weekly reading assignments. As you read, pay
attention to the vocabulary in each assignment.
Take the time to note and look up the meaning
of words you don’t know. If you come across
one of the words in this book, note the context
in which it is used. You might even want to jot
down the sentence on the page with the word
in this book.
If you are not currently in school, the type of
reading that will best prepare you for the GRE
general test is nonfiction. Read the newspaper.
Read serious magazines, such as New Yorker,
The Economist, or The Nation. Read biographies.
Choose a subject that matters to you, and read
everything you can find on the topic. As you
read, pay attention to the vocabulary you en-
counter; learn the words that are new to you,
and note the use of words you have learned
from this book.
