Alaska is a wildly beautiful state, encompassing
vast forests, thousands of lakes, miles-deep
bluish glaciers, snow-peaked mountains, and
remarkable wildlife.
Stretching hundreds of miles from Puget Sound,
Washington, through the British Columbia coast
and into the Gulf of Alaska, the Inside Passage
includes more than 1,000 islands, seemingly
endless shoreline, and thousands of idyllic coves
and bays of blue-hued waters where whales,
porpoise and sea otters frolic. Bears, deer and
other wild animals can be seen roaming along the
densely forested shoreline, as bald eagles soar
above. And with each turn of the bend yet another
incredible view of mountains, sea and sky unfolds.
Each community in Southeast Alaska clings to
its cultural heritage.
In Ketchikan, ancestral home of the Tongas tribe of
Tlingit, travelers nd the world’s largest collection of
totem poles. Museums and cultural centers provide
native dancing, carving and artifact exhibits.
Skagway, which lies in the heart of Gold Rush

Gold Rush National Historical Park where wooden

5 percent of the state’s total land surface, add the
“wow” factor to the cruise experience. The Gulf of
Alaska, also known as the “Route of the Glaciers,”
holds the highest concentration of glaciers in the
state. In Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve you
can observe whales, stellar sea lions, sea otters,
porpoises and harbor seals.
Beyond Alaska’s ocean shores, an excursion
to Denali National Park is the natural choice to

A four-day getaway could be what you need to relax and rejuvenate from
the grind of a job, anxiety about busy schedules, and the stress of home
responsibilities. AAA travel agents are often asked by exasperated would-be
travelers “Where should I to go?” A tip I often give is to explore what’s right
here in our own “backyard.” One of my recommendations is the Seven Natural
Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon.
My favorite means to see this national park is by the Grand Canyon
Railway. Forget the long drives, endless lines of stop-and-go trac, circling
lots looking for parking, and mindless wandering the area for lodging, food
and attractions. The Grand Canyon Railway is a one-stop-shop for any family
to get a real taste of the American West … trains, Route 66, historic hotels,
assorted wildlife, and highland desert landscapes. Even if you only have an
afternoon to spare, you can ride the Grand Canyon Railway up; visit the inside
of the park and its various attractions; and three hours later, catch the train
south back to Williams.
After a ve-hour morning ight from Newark to Phoenix, we drove north
to Williams, Arizona. We drove past the desert’s majestic Saguaro cacti,
climbed elevations through Ponderosa Pine forests, and wondered at the
red rock clis anking the highway. We paused for a few hours in Sedona
and arrived in Williams just before dusk to check-in at the Grand Canyon
Railway Hotel.
The next morning we hopped aboard the train for a 65-mile ride farther
north to Grand Canyon National Park. The train stops at the station in
Grand Canyon Village. The hotel properties within the national park are
well-maintained, and all the hotels are within walking distance of the Rim.
A color-coded, free, electric shuttle bus meanders through the park, by-passing
long lines of tourists’ cars, to various attractions, trail heads, hotels, and lookout
points. We were lucky enough to spend the night at Maswik Lodge within the
park. At nightfall we walked from our hotel to the Rim for the most amazing
view of stars and moonlight reecting o the colorful, sediment-layered walls
of the canyon.
On an afternoon train ride back to Williams we slowly descended in
elevation through the Kaibab National Forest. We arrived back at the
Grand Canyon Hotel with enough time to revisit the downtown neon streets
and diners of Williams. This was a short vacation that was truly grand.

AVOID LONG AIRPORT LINES
If you don’t like waiting in long airport lines (and who does), consider applying
for membership in the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) PreCheck
program. This is an expedited security-screening program connecting travelers
departing from airports within the United States with smarter security and
a better air travel experience.
The TSA PreCheck program is currently available at more than 200 airports with
79 participating airlines nationwide.
Members of the PreCheck program can take advantage of dedicated screening
lanes at airports, plus you can keep shoes and light jackets on, and toiletries
and laptops stay in bags, so there’s no fumbling around as you approach the
conveyor belt.
AAA Schuylkill County will host a temporary
TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center
To provide AAA members and travelers a convenient way to enroll in the
TSA PreCheck program, the AAA Schuylkill County oce will serve
as a temporary “pop-up” enrollment center from
SEPTEMBER 2529, 2023
HOURS: 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

It’s a grand tradition in Europe. It begins the last Sunday in November
and continues through December 25. Streets are transformed into winter
wonderlands full of festive lights, stalls lled with toys, ornaments,
and delightful food and drink. It’s the season for Christmas Markets –
Christkindlmarkts as they are known in Europe.
In the Czech Republic, ancient Prague, the “City of 100 Spires,” is a wonderful
place for Christmas shopping and enjoying the glory of the season. With its
wealth of cultural attractions and scenic splendor, Prague remains a city of
immense interest to Eastern Europe visitors – a faraway place that’s as intriguing
as it is unique.
Fully getting the feel for the culture of Prague means wandering through
the alleys of the Old Town and the steep byways of Mala Strana, the vast
commercial arcades, the passages o Wenceslas Square, and the residential
districts around Prague Castle. Explore the Castle District, including the gothic
St. Vitus Cathedral and majestic Prague Castle. The famous panorama of this
castle is regarded one of the most enchanting in the world, and the nearby
600-year-old Charles Bridge with its 30 statues of prominent baroque sculptures

With all its beauty and charm, Vienna, Austria is another wonderful city for

known for its imperial palaces – most notably the Habsburg Palace. Visit the

palace can be viewed on a sightseeing tour along the Ringstrasse, which

In Budapest, Hungary, the “Queen of the Danube,” embrace the city’s
Yuletide cheer with a visit to the cozy Christmas market at St. Stephen’s
Basilica with its lovely ice rink, or head to the city’s largest market at
Vorosmarty Square, featuring a plethora of food and crafts stalls where
local musicians often perform.
In Dresden, Germany visit the world’s oldest Christmas market – the
Striezelmarkt – which has been delighting travelers since 1434. Take some
time to explore the stalls overowing with ornaments and sample local sweets.

As the days grow shorter and autumn leaves begin to fall, it’s a great time to make sure your
car is ready for the chilly weather that lies ahead. The long, hot summer takes a toll on your car
battery, shortening its lifespan. By the time sweater weather has arrived, your battery may be
starting to lose its charge.
Modern vehicles oer drivers a wide array of onboard accessories and entertainment, from
multimedia players and Bluetooth connectivity to backup cameras, GPS navigation, and heated seats.
While these bells and whistles elevate the driving experience, they also draw power from the battery,
even when the engine isn’t running, creating a parasitic drain. If your battery is already declining after
enduring scorching summer heat, one parasitic drain may be all it takes to nish it o.
Don’t Fall For These 7 Silent Battery Drains:
1. Headlights Left On – While many modern vehicles automatically turn the headlights o after
turning o the ignition, some cars still don’t have this helpful feature. As a result, a fully charged
battery can be completely drained of power in just one to two hours if the lights are left on when
the engine is powered down.
2. Interior Lights Left On – When an interior light is left on after the engine is turned o, the battery
is slowly drained of power. This frequently happens when a door is not fully closed, the glove box or
vanity mirror is left open, the trunk is not completely shut, or the reading lights were not turned o just
before exiting the vehicle.
3. Accessory Socket Plug-Ins – The accessory socket (i.e., cigarette lighter) is a handy spot to plug in
phone chargers, radar detectors, air fresheners, dash cams, and other gadgets. The 12-volt outlet is
powered by the car battery, even when the ignition is o. If an accessory remains plugged in with the
engine o, it continues to draw current from the battery.
4. Key Fob – Modern vehicles are opened with the click of a button using a key fob. Some cars
even detect when the fob is near, allowing the driver to simply touch the handle to open the door.
When the key fob is close by, a receiver inside the vehicle wakes up to wait for instructions (e.g., lock
or unlock the car, start the engine, open the trunk, etc.). If you leave the fob within 15 feet of your
vehicle, the receiver remains engaged as it waits for your command, slowly discharging the battery.
5. Corrosion – Have you ever seen a powdery white, blue, or green substance on your battery
terminals? Batteries contain a combination of chemicals that work to power your battery. When the
gas or liquid from these chemicals come in contact with the metal battery posts, a reaction creates
powdery corrosion. This build-up of chemical waste can drain the power out of your battery and
shorten its life.
6. Aftermarket Car Stereos – Car stereos installed by the automaker typically will not drain your
battery; however, if you have an aftermarket stereo system, the larger and more powerful the
system, the greater the potential for battery drain. Sometimes, aftermarket stereos are installed in a
way that the wiring causes the system to continue to draw power even when the car is not in use.
7. Car Alarms – Like stereos, car alarms installed by the automakers generally don’t cause trouble,
but aftermarket car alarms are a dierent story. If installed incorrectly, they can cause a signicant
drain on your battery.
When driven under normal circumstances, car batteries have a three-to-ve-year lifespan.
However, if your battery is reaching the end of its lifespan or has died unexpectedly, AAA is here to
