AIHAs Highlights
and Successes
Dear AIHA member,
With 2022 in our rearview mirror, I’m pleased to highlight some of AIHA’s achievements
in the past year. You will nd that your association is heading in the right direction to
further empower and sustain the profession of occupational and environmental health
and safety (OEHS).
I’m delighted to report strong progress across all ve domains of the AIHA strategic plan. Most notably:
AIHA held two successful conferences: the hybrid AIHce EXP 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee, which
welcomed 3,000 onsite attendees and 1,100 more online participants, and the Product Stewardship
Society’s PSX 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky, attended by nearly 300 registrants.
The association has launched a series of new working groups and initiatives, including:
The new Thermal Stress and Dermal and Surface Sampling working groups and the PR(IH)DE special
interest group.
Commit to C.A.R.E. (commit2care.org), a public awareness initiative aimed at pandemic prevention and
control for small businesses.
The Spanish language translation of The Role of an Industrial Hygienist in a Pandemic.
AIHA offered active military members a discounted rate for AIHA membership, for the rst time.
The Dening the Science Advisory Group created a new research and development ofcer position for all
technical committees and expanded awareness of our OEHS research agenda to NIOSH.
The Standards of Care, State of the Art vs. Practice, and Improving Exposure Judgments Initiatives, the
last of which included a free course on accurate exposure risk decision-making that allowed attendees
to earn eight contact hours. The association secured an additional $110k cooperative agreement
grant from NIOSH to develop more knowledge products that educate small businesses about airborne
transmitted diseases and indoor air quality during pandemics, bringing our total to $620k.
The association, with the support of approximately 350 members, authored government relations
documents on a range of topics, including a request for information from the Environmental Protection
Agency on recommendations to improve the IAQ of buildings.
AIHA joined the [Re]Build America’s Schools Infrastructure Coalition (BASIC) to promote healthy schools.
AIHA Prociency Analytical Testing (PAT) Programs launched a new program on airborne particulates.
AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Programs (LAP) LLC was recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration to accredit food labs under FDA’s Laboratory Accreditation for Analyses of Food (LAAF)
Program.
This annual report offers a glimpse into our 2022 successes. I hope that as you read it, you’re motivated
to join AIHA in our future endeavors. I also invite you to visit our website www.aiha.org and follow us on
social media to get a more comprehensive view of our work.
As always, these achievements would not have been possible without our volunteers, and AIHA offers you
our sincerest thanks. Whether you’re a member of the Board of Directors or a volunteer group, an author or
peer reviewer for The Synergist, an AIHA webinar presenter, or a speaker at the AIHce Nexus lounge—no
matter how you invested your time, you’ve helped raise the bar for the profession.
Thank you for helping AIHA make a difference!
Sincerely,
Lawrence D. Sloan, FASAE, CAE

Future Leaders Institute
AIHA hosted Future Leaders Institute and graduated
37 people from the 2022 class. Attendees came from
around the world to this event sponsored by Amazon
with contributions from 3M. Thanks to the Stephen C.
Davis Memorial Grant, two students, from Zambia and
the United Kingdom, were able to attend.
AIHce EXP
AIHce EXP 2022 debuted as AIHA’s
rst hybrid conference. On-site
events were held in person in
Nashville, Tennessee, while half of
the program was livestreamed to a virtual audience.
This year, the conference welcomed 2,848 in-person
and 1,135 virtual attendees.
The revamped conference featured two keynote
sessions, nearly 200 educational, pop-up, and
main stage sessions, 47 professional development
courses, 175 exhibitors, three learning pavilions, 14
innovation stations, 21 health and wellness sessions,
and six professional and student poster sessions. An
enhanced Nexus Lounge for students and early career
professionals featured a “Lessons in Leadership”
program presented by AIHA’s named award winners,
volunteer group and committee members, the
conference keynote speakers, other special guests,
and AIHA Board members. In addition, the conference
provided numerous networking opportunities for
OEHS professionals.
The association extends many thanks to our eight
key sponsors for the 2022 conference: Casella, SGS
Galson, Bureau Veritas, Dräger, DuPont, TSI, SKC, and
VelocityEHS.
AIHF hosted the 36th Annual Fun Run, with Amazon
as the premier sponsor. The event raised nearly
$17,000 for the foundations various scholarship
funds.
AIHce EXP 2023 will take place in Phoenix, Arizona,
on May 22–24, 2023. The conference will offer both in-
person and virtual participation methods.
Government Relations
In 2022, volunteer engagement
in government relations soared
by more than 260 percent
compared to the previous year,
demonstrating members’ high level of interest
in working with policymakers to protect more
workers and their communities. For example, AIHA
members were featured at a White House summit
on indoor air quality, spoke at the rst-ever meeting
of the National Integrated Heat Health Information
System, presented to more than 3,000 attendees
at an OSHA stakeholder meeting on heat-related
hazards, and testied on COVID-19 regulations. Your
fellow volunteers also commented on more than 50
legislative and agency actions, voicing their technical
expertise to policymakers to help improve the
health and safety of workers and their communities
throughout the nation.
This year, AIHA has a new set of public policy priorities
for noise, thermal stress, improving learning and
working conditions in schools, and encouraging more
students to pursue careers in OEHS. These policy
priorities will guide AIHA’s work and engagement
with policymakers through 2023 and beyond, while
still ensuring that other OEHS public policy issues are
covered.
The Hamilton Club’s primary goal is to further the
mission of creating knowledge to protect worker
health through strong partnerships and collaboration
with our most engaged industry suppliers. Just as
Alice Hamilton’s work exerted a profound inuence on the eld of industrial hygiene, AIHA’s Hamilton Club
partners are thought leaders and contributors who, through their innovation and expertise, are helping shape
the future of the profession.
Many thanks to all of our Hamilton Club partners that supported the association’s work in 2022: SKC,
Amazon, EMSL Analytical Inc., SGS Galson, Casella, AccuTec-IHS, Assay Technology, Dräger Inc., Gasmet,
Nanozen, TSI Incorporated, and VelocityEHS.
